Essex Manufactured in Resin and having a Stainless backing plate, by Renamel of London from the early 60’s until 1974 when the County Boundaries of England were changed. The Shield has three Seaxes crosswise (fessewise) which are said to be Pommelled (rounded at the hilt end) and Hilted (cross/hand guard of a sword are of a different colour to its blade) A seaxe has a curved and notched blade. These have the cutting edge facing upwards. The arms, granted on 15 July 1932, are attributed to the ancient Kingdom of the East Saxons. Similar seaxes can be found blazoned on the shield of Middlesex.
