Speedway started in Halifax as early as 1928 and was staged at Thrun Hall, but this only lasted a couple of years.

Re-starting in 1948 as the Halifax Nomads.

In 1949 a new stadium at the "Shay" came into being and the team was nicknamed the "Dukes" after the Duke Of Wellington's regiment stationed in Halifax.

The Elephant being the Regiments symbol, was also adopted.
Sadly Racing only lasted until the end of the 1951 season.
